Yet among the other exotic materials with which it is grouped, it is the only one which does not occur in nature; rather it is man-made, discovered only 5,000 years ago, and thus relatively new among other invented mediums, such as pottery and metal. The manner in which man first discovered how to produce glass from sand still remains a mystery, and we can only marvel at the achievements of its ancient artisans and admire their ingenuity.
