Turtles

Though the turtle is not mentioned even a single time in the Bible, the Land of Israel is blessed with many different varieties,
including pond, sea, and land turtles, and leatherback and softshell turtles, because of her border with three seas and the presence of Lake Kinneret (the Sea of Galilee) and the Jordan river,
as well as many other seasonal "wadis" (small streams).
Two types of tortoises are to be found here: the extremely rare Egyptian tortoise, which lives in the desert, and the Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise.

The latter, a beloved pet and tasty delicacy that has become uncommon in many Mediterranean countries, is actually the most frequently seen in Israel (perhaps because turtles are not kosher). Because Israel, like many other developed countries, is beginning to face pollution of her once pristine waters, the Caspian turtle (a rather slimy-looking brown variety which thrives in polluted waters and sewage) is also very prevalent. The green sea turtle featured on our T-Shirt, whose text reads "The Nature Collection", swims both the Red and Mediterranean Seas along our coasts.
