Camel Dance

T-shirt - Camel DanceThe multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and frankincense; and they shall shew forth the praises of the Lord. Isaiah 60:6

Camels, being the primary means of transportation amongst the ancient peoples of the Middle East, are as oft mentioned in the Bible as the varieties of sacrificial animals. They were beasts of burden that carried goods and riders, drew chariots, and frequently were richly adorned as an indication of the wealth of their master. Camels were amongst the signs of the Lord's blessing upon the patriarchs, who through His goodness amassed large herds and flocks of all sorts of animals. From the story of John the Baptist we learn that their hair apparently came in pretty handy as well.

Those who have never visited the Holy Land often ask if the Israelis are already "covered" by a "multitude of camels". Isaiah's statement being a prophetic foretelling of the coming Redemption, we only wish! In fact, the native and once numerous camel population has been restricted to the zoo and to a few ethnic minority groups that roam the deserts. The Bedouin (Arab nomads who continue to live much like the patriarchs did in the southern regions of Israel) are still often seen with their tents and camels, and it's mostly for their sake that even modern desert roads are dotted with warnings of "Camel Crossing!" (Of course, the camels on the big yellow hazard signs usually aren't dancing.)
